Construction specialist Brid's celebrates its first 25 years with two silver-lined Charlton-bodies Volvo FMXs

COVER STORY: SILVER LININGS

CONSTRUCTION SECTOR SPECIALIST BRID’S IS CELEBRATING ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY AS A LIMITED COMPANY THIS YEAR WITH TWO SMART NEW VOLVOS IN A STRIKING SILVER WRAP, AS BILK & TIPPER REPORTS.

Given that about half of all businesses fold within their first five years, getting to 25 years is definitely worthy of celebration. So now that construction industry transport specialist Brid’s has reached its 25th anniversary, founder Wayne Briddon decided to mark the occasion with a pair of new silver Volvo FMXs. “When making capital purchasing plans for 2025, I realised it was the anniversary and I thought we had to mark it, so I ordered the trucks with an appropriate colour scheme,” he says.

For this silver anniversary, Wayne decided to depart from the firm’s traditional smart red and white livery, and has had the trucks wrapped, with cab and body in silver, complemented by shiny red detailing. There are also stickers on the cab to denote the 25th anniversary. The new trucks are highly specified inside and out. Wayne went for the 500hp engine in the Volvos to give that extra bit of power, as well as a high-spec cab. Inside, all the boxes have been ticked to give maximum comfort for the drivers.

SECOND CHANCES

WILLIAM NICOL (ABERDEEN) RUNS A BEAUTIFUL TANKER FLEET THAT HAS RECENTLY BEEN JOINED BY TWO SHINY NEW VOLVO FH 540 6x2 TRACTORS, DESPITE SOME MIXED EXPERIENCES WITH THE SWEDISH BRAND IN THE PAST. BULK & TIPPER FINDS OUT MORE.

Some fleets have liveries and colour schemes that are instantly recognisable on the road. And Aberdeen-based William Nicol (Aberdeen) is just such a fleet, with its beautifully presented tankers in cream, maroon and red.

The company has operated high specification equipment for decades, often with relatively high power ratings to maintain journey times over the long distances it typically covers. And it goes for the biggest cabs, equipping them to a high standard, as most of the fleet is away from base for much of the week.

“We celebrated our 90th anniversary recently,” says transport manager Gordon Horne, who has been with the company for many years.

DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH

FAMILY-OWNED QUARRY OPERATOR AND AGGREGATES SUPPLIER MONE BROTHERS IS CELEBRATING ITS 60TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR, BUT WHILE MUCH HAS CHANGED IN THAT TIME, IT STILL PRIDES ITSELF ON MAINTAINING THE VALUES INSTILLED BY ITS FOUNDERS, AS BULK & TIPPER FINDS OUT.

Back in 1965, three young brothers, originally from Ireland, looked to make a living for themselves by setting up their own plant and transport business in South Leeds. The Mone Brothers could hardly have foreseen that 60 years later, their business would still be thriving, becoming one of the most established names in the construction sector in Yorkshire and employing 90 people across eight sites.

Such a milestone is well worth celebrating – there aren’t that many businesses in the sector of a similar age in Yorkshire – and Mone Brothers intends to do just that.

Full company celebrations are planned for later in the year, but physical recognition of the milestone has already arrived in Mone Brothers yard in Morley, near Leeds, in the form of five 32-tonne MAN TGS tippers with L Townend bodies.

OLIVER'S TWIST

OLIVER JORDAN TRANSPORT USES A SCANIA 770S WITH SDC FLATBED TO MOVE OLD RAILWAY SLEEPERS AND RAILS FOR RECYCLING. BUT IT'S SOMETHING OF A DEPARTURE FROM THE NORM FOR THIS WELSH OPERATOR, BOTH IN TERMS OF THE MARQUE AND THE MISSION, WRITES BULK & TIPPER.

Deep in the flatlands of the Fens, the Cambridgeshire town of March is a long way from Oliver Jordan’s home base in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. That is where Bulk & Tipper caught up with him however, and he was there because that is one of the many places around the UK to which his work takes him.

When old railway sleepers and rails have to be taken up and replaced, they need to be removed and disposed of – and it is Oliver who provides the necessary transport to a Network Rail recycling centre. Yet while the task may seem a little mundane, the truck the 32 year-old regularly drives certainly isn’t. He’s to be found at the wheel of a mighty Scania 770S 6×2 tag axle tractor unit that he acquired second-hand just over 12 months ago; almost all of the trucks he has obtained are used. “It gets more attention than my wife – and she’d be the first to tell you so!” he laughs.

INVESTING IN SERVICE

J O’D GROUP HAS RECENTLY TAKEN DELIVERY OF 22 VOLVO TRUCKS, ADDING TO AN ALREADY IMPRESSIVE FLEET. BUT IT'S ALL IN A DAY'S WORK FOR A COMPANY THAT IS INVESTING TO GIVE CUSTOMERS THE BEST POSSIBLE SERVICE, AS BULK & TIPPER REPORTS.

A familiar sight on the roads of south-east England for more than 35 years, J O’D Group’s trucks are easily spotted in their smart white livery with striking red lettering. And they are becoming an even more familiar sight now, as the company continues to expand its operations and its fleet. Indeed, in recent months, the firm has put 22 new Volvo trucks on the road, some as replacements and others additional vehicles to cope with a growing volume of work.

The new trucks comprise FL skip-loaders, FMX tippers and FH tractor units. The final six skip wagons, seven tippers and a tractor unit arrived recently on 25-plates. All are of a high specification inside and out, as is usual for this company. J O’D Group’s fleet has always been largely Volvo-based, according to its transport manager, Kevin Ryan. “We’re big fans of Volvos,” he confirms.

MULTIPLE CHOICE

THE ROAD TRANSPORT INDUSTRY IS HOST TO MANY SPECIALIST HAULIERS. BUT IT'S RARE TO FIND A MULTI-SECTOR SPECIALIST LIKE SCOTTISH MARVEL W&W MACKIE, AS BULK & TIPPER REPORTS.

Family-run firm W&W Mackie, established in 2006 and based in Alford, Aberdeenshire, provides an impressive range of services across a broad range of sectors. It has expanded organically over the past 19 years, adding trucks and trailers to the fleet as new customers and opportunities have arisen.

Owned by husband and wife team William and Mary Mackie, with their son William junior and daughter Alison also involved in the business. The name of William has been passed down through the family for at least four generations.

It was during harvest on the family farm that their journey into haulage began, when a truck and bulk trailer would be hired in to move material. The first truck they bought to run full-time was a Scania 114 380 6-wheeler with Hiab crane, which had been stretched into a rigid from a tractor unit.

DOUBLE BUBBLE

BENALU-LEGRAS IS A COMBINATION OF TWO LONG- ESTABLISHED FRENCH-BASED SPECIALIST TRAILER MANUFACTURERS WITH A STRONG PRESENCE THROUGHOUT CONTINENTAL EUROPE. AND NOW IT WANTS TO GROW ITS SHARE OF THE UK MARKET, AS BULK & TIPPER REPORTS.

Legras’ moving-floor trailers have a strong following in the waste, recycling and bulk haulage sectors in the UK. They have been available in this market since the late 1990s, building on the firm’s success in its home market. Legras, which was acquired by Benalu in 2022, has always dealt directly with operators in the UK, rather than via franchised agents, a move that has allowed it to tailor its product range to the specific requirements of the UK market.

Benalu, meanwhile, has specialised in lightweight aluminium tipping trailers from its inception in 1967, when founders Hubert Pora and Dominique Bonduelle built their first tipping trailers. They were pioneers in the use of aluminium chassis which, when combined with an aluminium body, gave operators a clear payload advantage over other tipping trailers. Back then, this was cutting-edge technology, and Benalu was the first manufacturer to produce a strong, durable aluminium chassis and an aluminium tipping body.
